I’m British, and I’ve lived in Japan, working in this field, for almost 30 years. I have a degree in linguistics, and I’ve been senior management at a major eikaiwa chain. But for the last 10 years, I’ve been freelancing. I used to visit Tokyo offices every day, but these days I almost always work from home – Zoom etc are convenient for me and my clients.
Most of my work is training/teaching, but I also edit, translate, write exams, consult and coach. I’ve taught almost every kind of student, from young children to old professors, but recently my work is almost all corporate training and private coaching for business people – whether senior executives or new graduates getting ready to work full-time.
My corporate training clients have included Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Bank of America, Bain Capital, BCG, PwC, Nomura Securities, Keidanren, Mitsui Real Estate, Takeda Pharmaceutical, and Suntory, and many more. Some of my work is paid for by the company or NGO, but of course I work for many private individuals too.
Although I have a solid academic background, and have continued studying linguistics all my life, my students and clients say it’s the way I talk and who I am that they like. I’m a relaxed, friendly person, and I’m genuinely interested in people and learning from them. Although I’m perfectly capable of lecturing like an academic, my job is to support you, to enable you to speak. I can pass on knowledge, but it’s usually more valuable for you to learn how to pass on your knowledge.
I can speak Japanese, and do speak it at home and work every day. This has shown me which aspects of English are hardest for Japanese people, whether it’s simple mistakes, pronunciation problems, or the different styles of Japanese and English communication. I have studied and taught phonology – pronunciation – a lot, but I don’t really think of that as my specialty, just something that needs a bit more knowledge to teach. Every student, every client, has different needs, and meeting those needs is what I do.

日本語も話せますし、自宅でも仕事でも毎日使っています。そのおかげで、日本人にとって英語のどの部分が特に難しいのかがよくわかります。単純なミスや発音の問題、日本語と英語のコミュニケーションスタイルの違いなど、さまざまです。音韻論、つまり発音については多く学び、教えてもきましたが、それを自分の専門だとは特に思っていません。教えるためには、少し余分な知識が必要な分野、という程度の認識です。生徒さん一人ひとり、クライアント一人ひとりにニーズがあり、そのニーズにお応えすることが私の仕事です。
